Family-based tool to assess home safety for children

Abstract

Introduction: Safety is a complex issue that is directly related to health, while the children’s curiosity and exploratory behavior are risky and due to damage or even death. The safety approach affects the behavior of the family in improving home safety, especially for under five children who need more attention. This study produced a home safety assessment tool for children to help families in this way.

Methods: This is a cross sectional study that produced a home safety assessment tool after reviewing the literature as well as using expert’s opinions such as Delphi and pilot study for under five children The Tool evaluated the safety of family homes in the Eyvanak area of Tehran. Then, the record of innovation feedback to the families and volunteers for community-based interface of the residents was done.

Results: This study led to the preparation checklist with 5 domains and 84 questions to assess home safety for children under 5. After evaluating the cross-sectional in Tehran, the results for the records of safety for each of the children has been set.

Conclusion: The necessity to improve home safety for under 5 children and the need to have a tool to assess the safety of the community needs assessment. This safety checklist tried to have the integrity and indigenous as much as possible and can help health policy makers in educating the families to promote safety
and reduce children damage by this objective and clear aspects of safety concept.
