Abstract: (26 Views)
This letter to the editor highlights the role of palliative care in reducing futile costs of healthcare services for patients with advanced cancer in their last days of their life. Based on our recent published study, we showed that end-of-life care costs in palliative care units are significantly lower compared to other hospital wards, primarily due to the avoidance of admissions to intensive care units.
Our findings indicate that a substantial proportion of medical interventions administered at the end-of-life days are unnecessary, leading to excessive healthcare expenditures without improving patient outcomes. In light of this, we advocate for the establishment and expansion of palliative care services, the development of clinical admission guidelines, staff training, and the implementation of advance care planning processes to reduce futile treatments.
