  Abstract

Introduction: Cardiovascular diseases (CVD) are the most important causes of mortality and morbidity around the world. The aim of this study was to reduce the risk factors of non-communicable diseases (NCD) among health workers of Kermanshah University during a four-year period (2008-2010).

Methods: The study was based on the WHO approach of the stepwise surveillance system to identify risk factors of NCDs. The risk factors of the NCDs were measured in all health workers before and after the intervention. The risk factors including BP, FBS, TG, Cholesterol, and BMI were assessed using standardized questionnaires. Data were entered in the EPI software and were analyzed in the SPSS. The interventions included education, facilities to increase physical activity, healthy diet, and smoking cessation counseling.

Results: Before the intervention, 19.8% of health workers were obese, 12.2% had hypertension, and 11.1% had FBS>126mg/dl. After the intervention, 14.4% of health workers were obese, 4.4% had hypertension, and 1.2% had FBS>126 mg/dl. Before the intervention, 83.5% of health workers had 1-3 risk factors. After the intervention, 70% had 1-3 risk factors. All the differences were statistically significant (P<0.01).

Conclusion: The result of this study showed that our intervention decreased the risk factors of the NCDs among health workers of the Kermanshah University of Medical Sciences.
